CHANEL FOR THE HOLIDAYS… VASILISA PAVLOVA

Holidays are for spending time with your family, vacationing to exotic locales or just cozying up by the fire with a great book. Time is what is really important this season so rather than spend an hour in front of the mirror applying a full face of makeup (you could be out throwing snowballs or sipping a glass of champagne while nibbling on fancy chocolate treats!), so why not opt for a look that is both chic and practical. Coco would approve!

Pair velvet skin with bare eyes and a slightly-darker-than-classic red lip for a flattering, modern look. Curl your lashes for extra oomph. It should take no longer than 10 minutes to achieve.

Note: If you are one of the lucky sorts that vacations in the tropics during the winter, then swap the velvet finish skin for a dewy glow and the satin lip for a hydrating lip shine in a similar shade.

1980’s GLAM… BREANNA BOX

Whenever Breanna drops by the studio we always wind up spending more time talking about movies, books and music (she is in the process of recording an album!) than actually doing makeup looks. However, on this day, her perfectly tousled 1980’s supermodel hair inspired me to do some cool-toned glamour. The thick brushed-up brows, matte eyeshadow and cool pink shades have an eighties vibe but rather than reference Vogue’s covers from this era (which mostly featured shiny lips), I went for a matte lipstick.

Note: This was the perfect look to try out three of Tom Ford’s new products – Lips & Boys in Anderson (matte!), Fiber Brow Gel (creates instant volume) and Waterproof Foundation and Concealer (his first full coverage formula).

SEPHORA X BEAUTY IS BORING, PRE-MAKEUP SKINCARE

SEPHORA X BEAUTY IS BORING, PRE-MAKEUP SKINCARE

Pre-makeup skincare is one of those essential subjects (maybe not to world politics but definitely when it comes to beauty!) that we really don’t talk about often enough. What you put on your skin, before applying your makeup, will determine how long your makeup lasts, the texture of your base, the general undertone of your complexion, etc. And so I was excited when Sephora asked me to test out some of their latest and greatest pre-makeup skincare products.

Prior to doing Crystal’s makeup in the animated image above, I applied a makeup gripper that creates an instant glow, a milk peel gentle enough to use before heading out the door, a pale blue tinted under eye cream that de-puffs and brightens under eye circles, and a complexion perfector that hides every trace of redness.

MARIE ANTOINETTE… JENNIFER PUGH

It’s Halloween weekend but rather than serve up something ghoulish this year, I got inspired by a recent bedtime read.  Stoned: Jewelry, Obsession, and How Desire Shapes the World is a historical account of how eight jewels shaped the course of history written by jeweler and scientist Aja Raden.  This book is a must read for anyone who loves jewelry (hand raised!), has an interest in human desire and enjoys an entertaining historical tale. Did you know that diamond engagement rings are a myth made up by an advertising firm? Or, more to the point of this post, that the French Revolution was really started over a coveted necklace?

Aja Raden’s brilliant chapter about the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette paints a different picture than the “Let them eat cake!” character that films, fictional books, etc have presented to us. In fact, Marie Antoinette is probably the first documented victim of tabloid slander. I won’t go into details (read the book!) but Marie deserved better and so this Halloween, I’m resurrecting her legend minus the part where she is falsely accused of causing the French Revolution.

A big thank you to the brilliant team that made Marie come to life:  Hair stylist Sheridan Ward, fashion designer Oscar Olima, illustrator (and our own Artist in Residence!) Regina Yazdi and the gorgeous Jennifer Pugh.  The studio is still covered in bits of lace, flower petals, white face powder and scattered pearls!

SEPHORA X BEAUTY IS BORING, NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE

SEPHORA X BEAUTY IS BORING, NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE

You are never too young or too old to start taking care of your skin. After all, your skin is your body’s largest organ and keeping it healthy should be a priority. I get to lecture all my younger friends about this because until I was in my late 30’s, I was weirdly blasé about skincare. My bathroom cabinet held some basic face wash, a lightweight moisturizer and a bottle of sunscreen that was rarely used. My skin always seemed healthy so until I noticed the emerging sunspots, fine lines and change in texture, I really didn’t think much about it. These days I take skincare seriously, in particular the treatment products that I use at night.

Having a solid nighttime routine sets up your skin to look great during the day – sans makeup or in a dramatic look. So I was thrilled to have the opportunity to test out some of the coolest new skincare products currently trending at Sephora. The above animated images were taken during our tutorial video shoot.

THE 1960’s NUDE LIP… MIRIAM HANEY

Miriam came to the studio the morning after I had watched (for the 2nd time) the original 1968 version of The Thomas Crown Affair starring Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen. So of course I couldn’t resist doing a look inspired by Faye’s dramatic lashes and perfectly peachy nude lips. The 60’s had so many iconic nude lip looks that were balanced with simple but striking eyes – think Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour or Brigitte Bardot in pretty much any movie.

This fall, why not pair 1960’s peachy nude lipstick and thick lashes with your sweaters and coats. It’s an interesting alternative to the season’s usual dark lip colors. Plus it’s a look that works on just about everyone. For deeper skin tones, create the same feel by using lipstick shades in adobe, caramel and warm chocolate.

Note: Miriam has the most gorgeous arched nose, I have serious nose envy every time I shoot her!

DAY LOOK: Romantic washes of violet, purple and burgandy around the eyes are perfect for Fall. Paired with a deep nude lip for day or clashing against a bright red lip for the evening, these colors look great on a surprisingly wide range of complexions. And of course, they are lovely with this season’s embellished fashions (Gucci anyone?).

For the day look, I used the pale violet shade in the Style Eye-Con No. 7 Plush Eyeshadow The Tease to sweep around the entire eye, then anchored the lower lash line with a smudge of the deeper burgundy color. Then I applied a single coat of Velvet Noir Mascara and brushed through the lashes with a spoolie for a defined but soft look.

To create a natural looking flush, I blended the lighter shade in the Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in Night Fever and Hot Stuff across the apples of the cheeks.

I wanted the lips to feel casual with a touch of romantic so I skipped liner and just applied the Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer in Love Drunk – a flattering deep nude with a slightly mauve undertone and a touch of golden shimmer.

As a finishing touch, I used my finger to gently tap on the Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator. I prefer to highlight the center of the face during the day and save the intense cheek bone glow for the evening.

PRODUCTS // Style Eye-Con #7 Plush Eyeshadow in The Tease, Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara, Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in Night Fever and Hot Stuff, Enamored High Shine Lip Lacquer in Love Drunk, Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator

LIMITED EDITION BEAUTY BOX GIVEAWAY! NIGHT

NIGHT LOOK: For the night look, I took inspiration from Guy Bourdin’s 70’s fashion editorials and went straight for his favorite color combo of purple and red. Using the same Style Eye-Con No. 7 Plush Eyeshadow in The Tease, I applied the deep shimmering shades of purple right over our Day Look violet shadow. To add some nighttime drama, I traced around the lashline and the inner waterline with the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer. And of course, another coat of Velvet Noir Mascara to create a heavy thick lash.

On the cheeks, I blended the two shades of Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in Night Fever and Hot Stuff together and then used them for both contour and blush – a signature Marc Jacobs Beauty technique called “draping”.

There is nothing like a perfect red lip and the Le Marc Lip Creme in Goddess is exactly that. It’s opaque enough that you don’t even need liner, unless you prefer it for extra staying power. I always apply it first with a brush to get the edges right, after that you can touch up straight from the tube.

And since nighttime makeup is generally viewed in low light settings, I like to add extra highlight to draw attention to the face. Using the Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator directly from the tube, I drew a streak down the cheekbone, the nose, the peak of the lips, the chin, etc. Then I used a gentle rolling/tapping motion with my fingers to blend.

FALL’S NUDE FACE… DINARA CHETYROVA

FALL’S NUDE FACE… DINARA CHETYROVA

I tend to do a lot of dramatic makeup looks in the fall. The season just feels right for jewel-toned smokey eyes, deep burgundy and wines, lacquered red lips, etc. However this year I want to take a moment to acknowledge the often overlooked mid-toned nude shades. These not quite warm but definitely not cool, almost tawny, prettier than taupe, possibly inspired by the texture of suede, colors are perfect paired with an oversized cashmere sweater and mussed hair. Apply them in watercolor like washes over your features, emphasizing the eyelids, cheekbones and lips. Skip mascara but deepen your brows for an editorial touch.

The limited edition Highlander in Tabboo! and Le Marc Lip Creme in Blacquer are finally available! The glittering jet black eyeliner and satin black lipstick were inspired by Marc’s collaboration with the artist Tabboo for the Marc Jacobs F/W 2016 collection. Rather than recreate the actual runway looks (which were brilliant but quite intense), I did more of a “runway to reality” version. Black lipstick can be surprisingly wearable when paired with a nude eye or even a graphic smoky eye. The secret is to keep the rest of your face minimal and let the black lips (and/or eyes) make the statement.
