It’s the 4th of July and rather than lounging at the beach all weekend, you are stuck in the city. So instead of sunkissed skin, natural makeup and a nude lip, why not go for some good old fashioned American glamour! Bold brushed up brows, a haze of metallic shadow and bright orange red lips – perfect for a sweaty disco, your friend’s boyfriend’s best friend’s Brooklyn roof top party, a slinky dress with several glasses of chilled proseco or even a floppy hat and black one piece swimsuit for that fancy hotel poolside soiree.

Lately I’ve had an inexplicable craving for the color blue. Sheer navy cottons, vintage indigo fabrics, Yves Klein blue leather and stacks of denim so I guess it was just a matter of time until blue made its way into the BEAUTY IS BORING studio.

I’ve always been a big fan of Sisley’s skincare, the Black Rose Mask is one of my all time favorites! However, until last week I had never fully explored their makeup line. To remedy that, Claire Grace and I spent the afternoon in the studio testing their products. Sisley’s makeup doubles as treatment so the mascara contains vitamin rich peptides for lash growth, the undereye concealer reduces puffiness and dark circles, the lip colors are moisturizing, etc. The formulas are truly impressive and the colors/textures are sophisticated plus surprisingly easy to use.
Note: This gold flecked khaki is a great alternative to the classic summer bronze eye!

I love the idea of makeup being a little messy, almost perfect but a tad bit off kilter. For this look I applied multiple coats of mascara, deliberately clumping the lashes together and tapping the skin under the lower lashes with the end of the wand.
Note: My boxer dog Mack is completely obsessed with Juliana and who wouldn’t be, she is as funny as she is naturally gorgeous.

The word “pastel” in reference to eye shadow takes me back to the 80’s but this dusty hued green from the Clarins Spring 2015 collection manages to be modern and very chic. It’s best paired with intense black liner and a pale lip as shown here on the gorgeous artist/model Samira Mahboub.

It’s been some time since I last posted and many of you have emailed me concerned that Beauty Is Boring is ending. I promise you that it’s not! I’ve had a crazy schedule this past three months between the holidays, travel and work (insert a bouquet of flowers and sincere apology here). However I’m back and I have a bunch of new images in my arsenal.
To kick it off, here is the stunning Sasha in an all NARS look. I had been staring at that shimmering greenish bronze Baalbek Eye Paint for months but hadn’t had a chance to use it. I decided to match everything else to Sasha’s newly red hair.

As a teenager, the only makeup product I owned was a black kohl eyeliner pencil. I often went bare faced to school since even at that age, I preferred late nights to early mornings and couldn’t bring myself to get up a moment earlier than needed to rush out the door. However, on the days I found a few extra minutes, I used that black kohl pencil to create a look that was an inexplicable cross between a chola gang girl with a penchant for finger painting and a gothic rocker suffering from the final throes of insanity. Was it attractive? No. Did I love it? Yes. And being a teenager should be about experimenting because one day, when you look back, it would be incredibly sad to realize that you never took any chances.
These days my eyeliner skills have improved (my aversion to morning has not) and sometimes it’s good to get back to basics. So here is a look done with just a single black kohl pencil on the striking Heather Kemesky.

Note: The MAC Waveline is a bit darker than Klein’s blue so I brightened it up with a touch of NARS Matte Eyeshadow in Outremer.
