CHANEL ETÉ 2016, LOOK 1… KATE HARRISON

CHANEL ETÉ 2016, LOOK #1… KATE HARRISON

I’ve been in France for the past 10 days, first the Cannes Film Festival, then a fragrance research trip to Grasse, a quick stopover in Nice and finally, a few days of beauty shopping in Paris.  And so it seems perfect to feature a very French brand (Chanel of course!) and a look that has it’s inspiration in the bright lips that are practically de rigueur along the Côte d’Azur.

The Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo (launched in early Spring), was not only used for this look but accompanied me (in my three favorite shades; Histoire, Lettre and Message) on my travels.  It has the color intensity of a lipstick but it’s formula is more of a lip balm.  Which is ideal for my lips post transatlantic flight and way too many glasses of champagne later.  I tend to wear them without any liner during the day and often apply, then blot to achieve a subtle stained look.  At night, I layer the Rouge Coco Stylo over lip liner.  I prefer an orange red so I use the Chanel Le Crayon Levres in 56 Orange Intense to fill in my entire lip, then apply the Histoire on top.

In the look above on the fabulous Kate Harrison (very inspiring woman, check her Instagram), I layered Histoire over Le Crayon Levres in 57 Rouge Profond to create a more balanced red.

Stay tuned for my beauty adventures in France!

THE PINK LIP… RAVEN LYN

THE PINK LIP… RAVEN LYN

I struggle with pink.  I theoretically embrace it because after all, it’s one of the primary make up colors and the favorite of many women.  I should like pink, possibly even love it but even as a little girl, I refused pink clothing, pink toys, pink anything.  However the above look with Raven might just change my mind.  Paired with a dramatic cat eye, bronzer and a subtle wash of rose gold on the eyelids, bright pink lips suddenly look cool.

Note: Raven has a unique way of maintaining her amazing curls, stay tuned for a tutorial from her!

ELLA FLOOD, LOOK #2

While Jenny and Ella are both gorgeous with natural makeup (or no makeup for that matter!), I thought we would have some fun with one of my all time favorite red lipstick shades (Rouge Dior 999).  To create Ella’s exaggerated bottom lash look, I used the under eye lash strips that I discovered on a recent beauty adventure to Make Asobi in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.

For more information about this inspiring mother/daughter duo, please view our previous post (Jenny & Ella, Look #1).

JENNY & ELLA, Look #1

Jenny and Ella Look 1

The first time I saw Jenny Brunt was on the cover of Allure with Kate Moss in the 90’s. Her signature shaggy pixie cut and striking blue eyes landed her two Allure covers as well as covers for Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Marie Clare and many more. She was also known for her beauty campaigns including L’oreal, Revlon and Clairol.

More than two decades later, we met on a photo shoot in Los Angeles.  I was immediately enthralled with Jenny’s brilliant sense of humor, amazingly fit physique and incredible face.  I have been plotting ever since to get her in front of my camera so I was thrilled when she reached out to let me know that she was returning to the modeling world and as a bonus, was bringing along her gorgeous daughter, Ella Flood.

Stay tuned for Look #2 tomorrow!

SPRING’S SMOKEY EYE… ADRIANNE HO

Spring’s Smokey Eye… Adrianne Ho

It’s always a pleasure to have natural beauty Adrianne Ho, model and founder of Sweat The Style, in the studio!  Inspired by Adrianne’s organic take on beauty, we did several looks that will be rolling out over the next month.  To start, I created this sophisticated Spring alternative to the classic smokey eye.   The burnished khaki cream eye shadow (one of my favorites from Tom Ford and yes, I know that it’s not an organic product but it’s so gorgeous!) is sultry enough for night but also works for a daytime look.  I paired it with all natural skin products and focused on creating healthy, glowing skin.

NARS UNDERCOVER… Kate Harrison

NARS just released “Undercover”, their Summer 2016 Collection and per usual, there are a bunch of gorgeous shades. However, since it’s still technically spring, I decided to do a romantic look with a touch of 90’s grunge as a way to transition the seasons. These shimmering pink and bronzed rose shades add warmth to the complexion plus they are flattering on a wide range of skin tones. The secret to making these colors more “cool” and less “pretty” is to keep the application a bit raw and messy, not too perfect.

Rather than use eyeshadow, I created this look by doing a wet application of the NARS Dual Intensity Blush in Liberation. Start by patting a small amount of NARS Eye Lid Primer in Translucent on dry eyelids. Allow it to set for a minute. Dampen a brush and swirl it across the Dual Intensity Blush in Liberation. The powder should be almost completely wet so you may need to spritz one edge of the blush to get the right texture. Blend the lighter pink rose shade on the inner half of the eyelids and under the eye. Then blend the deeper bronze rose shade on the outer half of the lids and under the eye. Apply the deeper shade in the crease and blend upward, stopping just short of the brow. Add a touch of the NARS Eye Liner in White to the bottom waterline to keep the eyes looking bright. Finish it with two coats of NARS Audacious mascara on the top lashes and one on the bottom.

I have a thing for orange lipstick. It’s shockingly beautiful on a wide range of skintones and much easier to wear than people tend to think. From pale sherbet and neon tangerine to sophisticated sunset and intense flame, there is most likely a shade of orange that is flattering on you. The look above features Chanel’s new Rouge Coco Stylo in 204 Article, a beautiful sheer orangey red that I layered over their Le Crayon Levres in 56 Orange Intense for an extra kick of color.

Note: The butterfly is a temporary tattoo by Hartland Brooklyn. All their temporary tattoos are made from vegetable ink which safe for sensitive skin. Quick tip… to remove temporary tattoos from your face, saturate a cotton pad in oil (cleansing oil, your favorite moisturizing oil or in a pinch, olive oil from the kitchen) and press it over the tattoo for a few minutes. Once it’s saturated, you can gently rub it right off without irritating your skin.

THE ARCHITECTURAL EYE… DINARA CHETYROVA

The Architectural Eye… Dinara Chetyrova

In late March, acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid passed away. She was an incredibly accomplished, intelligent and creative person who thrilled millions of people with her highly expressive, neo-futuristic designs. The graceful twisting and sweeping fluid forms that so often marked her work inspired this simple swoosh of liner. Paired with strong brows, nude lips and a wash of bronzed peachy pink, it’s a look both striking and subtle.

Note: If you are not already familiar with Dame Zaha Hadid’s work, she is definitely worth a Google. Click HERE to visit the page of her architecture firm, HERE to see her design work or HERE to visit her Wikipedia page.

To really get a sense for what this mascara can do, I decided to do a classic French look for the third look – a nude eye, groomed brows and a red lip.  However, rather than the usual natural lash style that goes with this look, I applied two coats of the Velvet Noir to create dramatic lashes.  Yes, there are only two coats used in the image above and no faux lashes!

Final thoughts… Velvet Noir is perfect for the woman who craves dramatic lashes. It doesn’t smudge, smear, crumble or flake and it’s surprisingly buildable.

For the second look in this series, I used the incredible Marc Marc’er Precision Pen in Cocoa to create a graphic version of a cat eye and paired it with brushed up brows, pink cheeks and matching pink lips.  It’s a bit of a girly look so I added an additional coat of the Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara to create deliberately clumpy lashes for a dash of cool.
